Farsi, also known as Persian, is the main language to descend from “Old Persian” and is primarily spoken in Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.

Historically, Farsi was widely understood in areas ranging from the Middle East to India, and populations of other Persian Gulf countries such as Bahrain, Iraq, Oman, Yemen and the United Arab Emirates. Due to immigration mainly from Iran, Farsi is also spoken in large communities in the United States of America and Europe, and is sometimes referred to as ‘Tehrangeles’.

Today, a total of 110 million people speak Farsi as either their first or second language worldwide.

5 interesting facts about Farsi

In 1935 Iran was called Persia however, the government contacted the countries it had diplomatic relations with, and requested they call it Iran. Iran is the country’s name in Farsi.

Farsi is the official language of Iran and the alphabet is based on the Arabic alphabet however, it does contain some additional letters that are not included in the Arabic alphabet.

Both Farsi and Dari are Persian however, Farsi is the name of the Iranian Persian language and Dari is the name given to the Afgan Persian language. Farsi and Dari are mutually intelligible and despite differences in pronunciation and grammar, Farsi can be understood by a Dari speaker and Dari by a Farsi speaker, both spoken and written.

Dari is one of the two official languages spoken in Afghanistan. Pashto is the other language, and even though Pashtuns are the the largest minority (around 40%), Dari is still the language of the majority, because Dari is used by all the ethnic groups to communicate with one another.

Many years ago, Farsi was known as Parsi and it was the language of the Parsa people, an Indo-European nomadic people, who migrated to the region around 1000BC.
