Nanjing displays ancient marriage, divorce certificates

Nanjing is exhibiting 80 pieces of old marriage certificates ranging from late Qing Dynasty (1644-1911) to 1970s. The oldest one is a marriage certificate from the period of Emperor Xianfeng (1850–1861) in the Qing Dynasty. Besides, divorce certificates and application paper for remarriage are also on display.

The exhibition held at a shopping mall in Xinjiekou district of Nanjing will run through Aug 22.

▲A marriage certificate from the Minguo era (1912-1949) is on display. The certificate, which was found in Jiangning county in Jiangsu province, has pictures of cupid, auspicious patterns of swallows, round moon, flowers, and also blessing phrases.

▲A marriage certificate from the Minguo era is on display. The certificate, which was found in Nanjing, specifies the matchmaker, marriage witness, officiator, and the wedding site. Auspicious symbols such as peonies, mandarin ducks and phoenix are also seen on the paper.

▲A divorce certificate from the 1950s is on display, which was issued by the government of Nanjing in 1953. The paper specifies the couple's names, places of birth, birthdates and fingerprint seals.

▲A written judgment issued by the court in the 1950s in a divorce case is on display. It was found in Changde county of Hunan province. The court allowed the couple get divorced according to the new marriage law at that time, as their parents had arranged their marriage in their childhood.
