Translators: Caring for Your Body Whilst Working at Your Computer - Part 2_Shanghai Translation Company
Regular Exercising Is a Must!
If you’re totally sedentary at work, you must consider at least an hour of exercise per day as part of your work day. Yes, we know you don’t have time and you probably hate exercising! Unfortunately, exercising comes with the job and, because you’re doing a job that you love, keeping your body and mind healthy is just a part of the whole package.
The easiest way to incorporate exercise into your working day is to attended a gym that’s close by and offers lunchtime classes. Obviously not everyone will have access to these facilities, but if you do, we strongly suggest that you take advantage of these classes. If you don’t have a gym near you, or you hate the thought of group exercise classes, then you must do whatever it takes to exercise your body.
There are many little tricks you can try if you work from home that will force you to exercise; such as when your phone rings – before you answer your phone, stand up, and walk around while speaking on the phone. If you’re listening to a webinar, lift the set of dumbbells you’ve got sitting on or near your desk. Set your timer: work on your computer for 50 minutes, then exercise for 10 minutes by doing squats, jumping jacks, or simply running on the spot in your office.
Take Good Care of Your Body and Your Overall Health
For most translation experts, having the flexibility of being able to work from home at your own pace and to your own schedule is the greatest bonus of all, so exercising your body for what is actually a small part of your working day is a very small price to pay for overall good health. It’s very easy for time to slip away from translators and, before they realize it, they’ve been sitting at their computer for hours on end without any thought of exercising their body. So, our personal recommendation if you’re not going to attend a gym is to do the ‘50 minutes on/10 minutes exercising’ regime. You’ll still get all your work done, and at the same time your body will receive the exercise it needs - and your mind will love the 10-minute reprieve away from the computer!
