Bulgaria and Its Languages - Part 2_Shanghai Translation Company
After gaining its sovereignty from Turkey, Bulgaria became an Independent State in 1878.
Bulgarian Language and Phrases
The Cyrillic alphabet used in the Bulgarian language is also used in Serbian, Russian and Macedonian languages.
The Bulgarian language’s history can be divided into three periods – Old, Middle and Modern. The ‘Old’ period lasted between the 9th and 11th centuries, with the texts from this period making up the majority of the Old Church Slavonic Texts. The ‘Middle’ period lasted between the 12th and 14th centuries, while the ‘Modern’ Bulgarian period started in the 15th century. However, today’s modern literary language, which is entirely different from Old Bulgarian, was only formed during the 19th century. The two major dialect groups of modern Bulgarian are the Eastern and Western dialects, with each of these being subdivided into Northern and Southern varieties. Today’s modern literary language is primarily based on the north-eastern dialect.
Language Tips!
The first thing you need to understand about the Bulgarian language is that it uses the Cyrillic alphabet, which was created specifically for the Bulgarians by St Constantine the Philosopher in the year 855 A.D. The Bulgarian people are exceptionally proud of their language because it played such a major role in the development of the traditions and culture of Bulgaria.
If you’ll be travelling in Sofia and you’re concerned about all those new symbols, you don’t need to worry. Many of the signboards in Sofia are actually written in English! And the same is true in many restaurants and hotels.
But sometimes there’s no getting around it, and if you’re excited to explore Bulgaria on your own, in particular the jewels that take you off the beaten path, then why not take some time to learn the Cyrillic alphabet? It’s actually not as hard as it looks. Many of the letters are very similar, and the ones that are different are quite easy to remember. And if you’ll be staying a while, or maybe you’re just interested in learning Bulgarian, there are many language schools to attend. Bulgarian translation services are widely available, and so are English-speaking primary schools and day-care centres if you’re planning on working here and would love to bring your family with you.
